India's rapid urbanization has posed significant challenges for cities, including resource optimization, sustainability, and improving the quality of life for its citizens. Smart cities have emerged as a viable solution to address these challenges, with the Internet of Things (IoT) playing a pivotal role. IoT facilitates the integration of technology into urban infrastructure, enabling real-time data collection, analysis, and decision-making. This paper examines the role of IoT in India's smart cities initiative, focusing on its applications, benefits, and challenges.
Through a qualitative analysis of literature and case studies, the research identifies key trends, barriers, and future directions for IoT-enabled urban development in the Indian context. The findings underscore IoT's potential to transform Indian cities into sustainable, efficient, and citizen-centric ecosystems.
